He remains a firm fan favourite in north London, but as time passes it looks increasingly likely this will be the Belgian’s last season there.
Vertonghen has amassed over 300 appearances for Spurs since joining the club from Ajax eight years ago and has remained a regular this season.
Rising defensive star Japhet Tanganga’s own expiring deal features an optional extension which the club are sure to trigger.
But as far as Vertonghen and Spurs are concerned it could be goodbye – and if that does happen he can walk away with his head high for what he has achieved at the Premier League side.
If he leaves before the season ends, though, Spurs could really struggle to finish in the European qualification spots.
